NEW MACHINES FOR SA LOTTO AND LOTTO PLUS LIVE DRAWS

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

South African National Lottery operator Gidani announced today that it would unveil new machines for the LOTTO and LOTTO Plus live draws. Mooinooi, (Afrikaans name for beautiful lady), Dimakatso (surprises in Sesotho), Tsakani (Tsonga word for happiness) and Mandlakazi (Xhosa word for mother of strength) will make their debut at tomorrow’s (October 17 2009) live LOTTO and LOTTO Plus draws.

As part of Gidani’s licence to operate the National Lottery, these machines have been subjected to rigorous testing at the Wits University’s department of engineering. The accreditation process consisted of 32 random test draws that were conducted in the presence of an independent auditor.

Gidani spokesperson Thembi Tulwana said the National Lottery operator had to procure additional machines to accommodate South Africa’s new and richest game PowerBall.

The machines that were previously employed for the LOTTO and LOTTO Plus draws will now be utilised for the PowerBall live draws every Tuesday and Friday. Nalakazi, Suriya, Mapula, Khensani, Suikerbossie, and Ndyebokazi will make their comeback on Friday October 23 during the first PowerBall live draw.

The PowerBall game, which was activated today (Friday 16 October) has kicked off with a guaranteed jackpot of R30 million.

Mega Millions and Powerball Agree to Ticket-Selling Partnership

Monday, October 19th, 2009

They are the two “marquee games” in American lotteries: Mega Millions and Powerball.  Each lottery state currently has one, but not the other. However, the Mega Millions consortium and Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) have reached an agreement in principle to cross-sell Mega Millions and Powerball in all U.S. lottery jurisdictions.

The agreement means that lotteries from across the United States, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, will be able to choose to offer their lottery players both jackpot games via their respective retailers.

States that currently sell Powerball and other lottery products will have the opportunity to begin offering Mega Millions tickets to their players via authorized lottery retailers.  As a result of this agreement, Mega Millions states will then be able to offer the Powerball game to complement their existing game mix. No firm date has been set for implementation, although it is hoped that it could be in early 2010. It is also hoped that this could be the beginning of several joint initiatives.

Mega Millions is currently played in 12 states, with a combined population of roughly 160 million.  Powerball is currently available from 33 lotteries (31 states plus the District of Columbia and Virgin Islands) with a combined population of roughly 125 million.

$189 Million Powerball Jackpot Won in Florida

Saturday, October 10th, 2009

(Powerball) One lucky ticket in Florida (1) matched all 6 numbers Saturday and will walk away with the $189 million jackpot.  The holder(s) of the winning ticket will now have to decide to either take the 29-year, 30-installment annuity, or the one time cash “lump sum” amount of $101,160,403.68.

One Lucky ticket in Iowa (1) had all 5 white balls and the Power Play option for a $1 million cash win.  This was a result of the new Power Play feature that turns any match 5 white ball win with the Power Play into a 5X multiplier and pushes the prize up to $1 million! Other big winners included 2 tickets sold in Arizona (1), and Indiana (1) that matched all 5 white ball numbers for a $200,000 cash win each.  There were a total of 1,122,808 additional winning tickets in America’s Game Saturday evening.  Those winners won prizes totaling $8,374,665.

The numbers drawn were 12, 24, 48, 50, 57 and the Powerball was 22. The Power Play multiplier was 3.
